Words that are polite and have a formal impression are called written language. Reports, newspaper and magazine articles use written language. One of the characteristics of written language is that there are many Chinese and idioms (熟語). Even when speaking, written words are often used in lectures and public speeches.

Japanese writing styles can be broadly divided into 〜である・だ体 and ~です・ます体. Both styles can be used as written words, but sentences that mix both styles are almost always incorrect. Be sure to write in one style.

3. Katakana words

There are many katakana words in Japanese, and they are often used in work situations. Katakana words are words that came from foreign countries, but they may be pronounced differently or may be abbreviated. Also, the meaning may be slightly different from the original meaning, so it is necessary to memorize the Japanese meaning. Some katakana words are only used in special industries.
