An exceptional feature of the genre is giant controlled combat robots. The main characters of the anime are schoolchildren who fight to protect their family and friends. The anime regularly touches on the topic of the relationship between a pilot and a robot.

Otaku（オタク “geek, nerd”）
An otaku is a person who is passionate about something. This could be anime, manga, cosplay, photography, idols, trains and other hobbies. The plot centers on the daily life of an otaku.

Spokon (スポコン “fighting spirit (in sport)”)
The stories calmly tell about the difficult path of athletes to victory. The main characters can be entire teams or individual athletes. The heroes of the genre, possessing a strong spirit and determination, undergo grueling training in order to defeat strong opponents and reach the heights of sports.
