Mysterious and highly anticipated by fans, Hayao Miyazaki's first cartoon in ten years, “How Do You Live?” (君たちはどう生きるか) finally released in Japan.

The film takes its name from Genzaburo Yoshino's 1937 novel, but the plot is an original story by Hayao Miyazaki. The film tells the story of a boy named Mahito, whose mother was killed in the bombing of Tokyo. The action unfolds in Japan during the Second World War.

"How do you live?" already called one of the best works of Hayao Miyazaki. Viewers in the reviews say: "You can watch this movie a hundred times and still discover something new for yourself. Animation is magnificent unlike anything seen in the last ten years."

The film contains the idea of creating a "conflict-free world with your own hands." The film explores the theme of a child growing up and its interaction with society. This is a story about how to overcome childhood selfishness and grow up to be a good person.

Ahead of the film's release last week, only a poster was released on Twitter, while plot details were kept under wraps. The trailer for the film was never released. "How do you live?" earned ¥1.83 billion ($13.2 million) from Friday to Sunday. This is the most successful start of a Ghibli film.

Speaking about the decision to abandon traditional marketing campaigns before the film's launch, Studio Ghibli chief producer Toshio Suzuki said the company wanted to "do something different."
