There has been a sharp decrease in Student Visa approvals for South Asian applicants seeking to study at Japanese Language Schools in Japan.
The percentage decrease by country is as follows.
Myanmar: 76% (2018) →15% (2019)
Bangladesh: 61% (2018) → 21% (2019)
Sri Lanka: 50% (2018) → 21% (2019)
This is due to government efforts to crack down on foreign nationals who enter the country to work using Student visas.
In the Kanto-Koshinetsu region where the highest rates of visa misuse was reported, percentage of visa approvals for South Asians dropped below 1%.
According to the Immigration Services Agency, the government is trying to clamp down on the increasing submission of false documents.
In contrast, visa approval rates for Chinese and South Korean nationals remained above 90%
With the severe labor shortage in Japan, employers who are relying heavily on exchange students for manpower have voiced their concerns about the stricter regulations.
