What to do if you drop your belongings on the train tracks
パーリン
You are standing on the platform of the train station waiting for your train. All of a sudden a strong gust of wind sends your hat flying off and onto the train tracks!! You want to inform the station master, but that is an unmanned station so there is no one you can ask for help!
What should you do??
First and most importantly, you must never go down to the tracks yourself!!! Even if no trains are scheduled to arrive according to the timetable, there are other trains like limited express trains that will pass through the station. Getting hit by a train is no joke, it can result in severe disabilities or even loss of lives. Train schedules will also be disrupted along the whole line, affecting tons of commuters across long distances.
Proceed to the nearest manned station at your destination and inform the station staff there.
Tell the staff 「帽子(boushi aka hat)を線路(senro aka tracks)に落としました(otoshimashita aka dropped)」which means "I dropped my hat on the tracks".
They will send personnel to retrieve your hat for you.
If the station where you dropped your hat is 1 or 2 stops away, you are likely able to get it back in a few hours time.
You will need to provide your contact information so it is preferrable if you have a phone number in Japan or you can provide the contact number of your accommodation (remember to notify the staff at your accommodation to answer the phone on your behalf).
※Note that the train operators are not liable for any damages to your item while it was on the tracks.
As a preventive measure (and to save you all the trouble), take off your hat and keep it inside your bag so that it doesn`t get blown away! Also try not to take out your belongings while standing near the edge of the platform to minimize chances of dropping them onto the tracks.
