Attire for Weddings in Japan
パーリン
Different cultures have different dress codes for weddings.
In Singapore where I come from, people attend weddings dressed in their very best. You get to see guests decked in vibrant colors and shimmering jewellery.
Dark colors like black and dark blue are frowned upon as they symbolize funerals and are therefore inauspicious.
In contrast to that, wedding guests in Japan tend to choose formal attire that is modest and does not stand out.
It can be difficult to decide what to wear to a wedding in Japan if you are coming from a different culture.
Allow me to introduce the basic dress code for weddings in Japan! (also applies to bags and footwear)

Color:
Choose dark colors that do not attract attention.
White is reserved for the bride

Prints:
Avoid attractive prints. Avoid floral prints as flowers are reserved for the bride. Also avoid animal prints as this signifies the killing of animals for their skin which is inauspicious for joyous occasions

Material:
Avoid fur or any material derived from animals as this signifies the killing of animals as mentioned above. Also avoid flashy clothing such that those with glitter or sequins attached.

Design:
Choose a modest design and avoid flashy or revealing attire as this would be bad manners.

All in all, choose an outfit that does not make you stand out more than the wedding couple. It is their big day after all and they deserve to be the stars!
