Things to note about Employment Contracts
パーリン
When a company decides to hire you, you will receive either an employment contract or a notice of employment conditions.
Before you sign or agree to the job, it is important to check the terms and conditions properly!
However, it can be difficult to understand the terms in Japanese.
Furthermore, work conditions in Japan may differ from other parts of the world.
Let me explain some of the key points you should take note of.

1. Training/Trial period
・whether you will be paid at the same rate as a full-time employee
・how long is the period

2. Holidays
・at least 2 days per week as stated by Japan Labor Laws
・the usual being weekends and public holidays

3. Amount of paid leave
・Japan Labor Law: 10 days per year

4. みなし給(Minashi Kyuu)
This is the amount of overtime pay in a month.
It is important to find out the number of overtime hours in a month.
※the average is 30 hours per month
Once you know the number of overtime hours, you will be able to calculate your hourly overtime wage and compare it against your basic hourly wage to see if the rate is fair
※Japan Labor Law states
Hourly wage outside of statutory working hours should be 125% of the basic hourly wage.
Hourly wage on holidays should be 135% of the basic hourly wage.

5. Calculation of pay and payment schedule
【Calculation day falls after payday】no issues whatsoever
【Calculation day falls before payday】you will be paid for the remaining working days of the month on the assumption that you will work regular hours for all those days.
Should you fail to turn up for work or work overtime, your pay will be adjusted accordingly in the next month.

6. Deductions from monthly wage
・Social Insurance (社会保険 Shakai Hoken)
Health Insurance(健康保険 kenkou hoken)+Pension(厚生年金 kousei nenkin)
Calculated based on your salary for the month

・Employment Insurance(雇用保険 koyou hoken)
Based on your industry of work

・Income tax(所得税 shotokuzei)
Calculated based on your salary for the month

・Residency tax(住民税 juuminzei)
Depends on your area of residence
